I’ve spent the  last year learning about Essve Multi-point Locks; Please take 10 minutes to read this information to assist yourself in finding the correct lock. Most brands have their name or logo on the faceplate, Essve is located Above the Latch and Deadbolt. There is normally a Truth label on the lock body.

There are certain measurements that are absolutely necessary and information needed when replacing an Essve / Truth Multi-Point Lock or installing a new one.

  1. Locking Devise Type:
  2. American or Euro Cylinder:
  3. Face plate width:
  4. Automatic or Manual Lock:

  6. Backset:
  7. Dead Bolt throw:
  8. Handle Height:
  9. Bottom Locking Position(s):

  12. Replacement Options:

1. Locking Devise:  I have seen only one version – The  Hook

2. American or Euro cylinder:  There are two types of keyed cylinders used on the Essve - Truth multi-point or single point locks. The shape of the cylinder and lock body are different.

3. Face plate width:  The face plate is the metal that runs the length of the door edge. The old style Essve - Truth were Yellow Dichromate Steel – goldish color.
The only width I’ve seen is  25/32 inch (20mm).

4. Automatic or Manual lock:  The only ones I’ve seen are the Manual Version; after the door was closed, one would lift the handle to engage the locks; Then turn Thumbturn to engage center deadbolt

5. Handle to cylinder spacing:  Handle spacing is from the center of handle to center of key cylinder / thumb turn. The Essve - Truth multi-point lock had one handle to cylinder measurement, that was 3-5/8 inch (92mm),

Essve  locks seems to have just one size;  other brands have 69mm, 70mm, 72mm, 85mm; However the standard in the United States is 92mm.

6. Backset: The backset is the measurement from the edge of the lock faceplate to the center of the Handle / Cylinder.

Essve locks have  mainly 1-3/4 inch (45mm) backsets. When measuring with the lock in the door, take care to notice if the lock is set back into the door panel. Don’t measure from the edge of the door, measure from the edge of the metal faceplate.

7. Dead Bolt throw: The deadbolt throw is how far the bolt extends beyond the faceplate of the lock.  The Standard deadbolt throw on  Essve locks is 1/2 inch (14mm).  The replacement locks are available in 1 inch (25.4mm) or 1/2 inch (14mm). We normally replace with the ½ inch bolt, so additional mortising is not needed. 1 inch (25.4mm) is available on request.

8. Handle Height: The  handle height is the measurement from the center of the handle down to the bottom of the faceplate or door edge.  Most doors have a standard 36 inches (914mm) handle height. However, Essve lock  did not go to the bottom of the door. The faceplate had a radius end that was mortised about 31 inches down from the handle.
Replacement locks can be cut to length and adjusted for these differences. The replacements will require some modifications, So please READ and understand all notes before ordering any multi-point locks.

9. Bottom Locking Position(s):  The bottom locking position is measured in the locked position; from the center of the handle to the center of the hook, or the bottom of the  locking devices are NOT  located in the same place and will vary by type.

10. Top locking position(s): The top locking position is measured in the locked position; from the center of the handle to the center of the roller or roundbolt, or the bottom of the Tongue. Depending on your version. The locking devices are NOT  located in the same place and will vary by type.

11.  Overall Length: The overall length is measured from the top to the bottom of the lock faceplate, most run the full length / height of door. Essve had two heights 68-1/8 inch for the standard 80 inch tall door and 81 inches for the 96 inch door.

12. Replacement Options: There are several options, none are perfect. Depending on your carpentry skills or what you  want as an end result we have listed two options for the Euro version and one option for the American.

Option 1 for Euro:   Replace with Winkhaus Hook Version
# 40281 for 68 inch length; 80 inch tall door – Euro cylinder version
# 40282 for 81 inch length; 96 inch tall door – Euro cylinder version

This will require Mortising the hook lock body in a different place on the door, cutting the extended lengths of the faceplate to length and relocating strike plates on door jamb.

Option 2 for Euro:  Replace with Tongue Version
# 40297 for 68 inch length; 80 inch tall door – Euro cylinder version
# 40299 for 81 inch length; 96 inch tall door – Euro cylinder version
This is the easier of the two replacements. This will require cutting the extended lengths of the faceplate to length and relocating strike plates on door jamb.
The bottom strike should be fine and usually does not have to be relocated.
On the taller 96 inch door the replacement # 40299 should be very clean with little or no modifications.

Option 1 for American Cylinder:  The American and Euro version  measurements are the same, the  key cylinder and handlesets are different.
Replace with Tongue Version and change your  handleset / Trim  to the Euro version.  Besides the old hardware looks rough anyway.

Final Thought:  If you do not understand this information, I would suggest finding someone that does.        www.allaboutdoors.com    6/17/2009  Rory Snow
